Do's and Dont's of Wine tasting..

Image
Breathe it in deeply.. lol Port, deep red or a dry white.   I thought that I was quite savvy with wine selection. You have the body of the wine, swirl it around in the wine glass then take a strong inhale of it before consumption and you should be good.  Umm.. nope.  There is more.  Allow me to share with you, what I learned recently at a wine tasting etiquette class.  Here are the DOs Look, swirl, smell and sip Do find out the format: Wine tasting can be casual or formal with seating and it helps to find out which one you are attending, you may have to dress the part.  Do take notes: a small note book is invaluable at these shingdings because after a few sips (at least for me) everything becomes fuzzy or pretty funny.  By giving each sample out of a score of 10, you can keep track of the ones that really left a good or bad impression.  I found out that I wasn't suppose to swallow, but then, where is the fun in that? Do swallow (if you want to):  This is the

Question: How about Restaurant Week every MONTH?!!

Image
Calling all Foodies... As TDC has been resolved, what becomes of  TTRW2017?   For the last couple of years, my friends and I look forward to Restaurant week in September as an opportunity to taste everything!!  The promotion and coordination between the eateries were flawless as they offered pre-planned meals at varying price points.  But as the time draws near, my good friend asked, 'Why can't we have  TTRW2017, every month?' Pizza in a brick oven at Kava Restaurant I thought that she was brilliant!  We had Bessfest in July 2017 and by all accounts, it was a huge success.  TTRW can be a themed monthly event of hand selected restaurants from each zone location.  Imagine 101 Arabian Nights themed week and escape to Apsara, Hakka, House of Jaipur or Namaste India for lunch or even dinner.  How about an International Themed week where skillful chefs can showcase their spectacular plating each and every day!  I can think of one that I KRAVE right

Jub Jub Have you ever been told that you have a sweet tooth? or heard 'Girl, you have Sweet Han'! Well, you are not alone.  If you meet any Trinidadian men, you will be amazed of their natural skill set to manipulate words, on the spot, and form a joke or compliment usually to a female.  We call it 'droppin' lyrics' .  This is my list of the island's confectionery titles and possible labels associated with them.. Jub -Jub : This is a soft gelatin brilliantly coloured candy, (coated in sugar and flavoured with Caribbean goodness) fruit chewy and has a marshmallow consistency.  The Caribbean flavours covers Passion Fruit, Lime, Caribbean Cherry, Guava, Coconut, Rum and Soursop. Drinks... A Trini twist

Image
Happy Tuesday!! When it comes to drinks, adult or kids version , there are a hand selected few that can be named as must haves.. The sweet life..  Enjoying a Carib at Pigeon Point Beach Enjoyed by Adults.. Carib Beer - Established in 1950, this locally brewed beer is a staple for Trinis.  The full bodied, balanced and distinctively smooth lager epitomises the Caribbean life. The revitalising appeal of this brew has made it an instant favourite for beer lovers.  'A beer is a CARIB.' Angostura Rum - Another local pride, Angostura Rum produces 11 varieties of rum and a vodka sold internationally as well as its celebrated Angostura Bitters!  My personal favourite is the Angostura 1824.  This rum is aged for a minimum of  12 years in American Oak barrels and hand picked by the master blender.   The dark rum is a delight on its own but most Trinis choose to mix it or any rum, with Coca-Cola.  This combination is very popular with a simple tag line , 'Can I get

Need a boost of energy and nutrition? J's Flavs

J's Flavs are the BOMB! Source : HomeMade Zagat   Pumpkin and Pineapple Punch  I had the pleasure of meeting Janelle Alexander-Wilson,  an up and coming entrepreneur who has discovered the sweet spot of finding what you enjoy doing and being paid for it!      J's Flavs began in October 2016 as secondary income to support her family. Within the last decade, the popularity of having a punch from the neighbourhood vendor became a common sight.  We Trinis love to drink our energy blasts in  a Styrofoam cup filled to the brim, with a cold and frothy punch forming a mustache at our mouths.  Janelle agreed with the readiness of energy that these drinks offered, but for her, they lacked flavour.   Therefore  she decided to whip up some combinations of her own in her kitchen and asked her children to be the food critics.  From that thought, s he created two product lines: Regular flavours and Gourmet. Her punches caught my attention for two r

It's ok to 'Cheat ' at the G Spot

'Cheat Night'.. Grilledcheezus! Hungry supporters for Grilledcheezus sandwiches If you’re looking for classic sautéed mushrooms,  t he G Spot food truck had this as one of their offerings for 'cheat night' on June 30, called #Cheese melts.  I realised that approximately every two weeks, there is a 'cheat event' going on at the G Spot.   I also figured out that you have a shorter waiting time if you arrive at 6 p.m. when the event is carded to start.  I collected my sandwiches in 20 minutes which was a vast improvement from my first experience with the Spot.  The crowd, I think, got the best of them.  What amazed me was on that day, the weather was what we Trini's call, 'bucket a drop' rain up to dusk, even still, people came out and supported the venture.  This was a good indication that people, other than myself, L♥ve we belly!  Bacon, Confit Mushrooms, Caramelized onions, Tarragon Poached Apples with Manchego Cheese on

The Youthful Vegan..

Meat? You do not need it my dear. Vegan Caprese , Cashew cream in a Ciabatta bread sandwich Source:  The Youthful Vegan I am what we say in Trinidad , a meat mouth.  If the meat done, the food done!  At this Green place, I didn't miss the meat. The Youthful Vegan is a delightful spot for vegan, vegetarian and gluten free, health conscious lovers and there are stark differences between these three options.   Vegan, emanates from strict vegetarian, therefore they will not use nor eat any animal products, including clothing.   Vegetarianism is further broken into 3 distinct types: Vegetarian : a diet that excludes all meat or flesh but may consume eggs and some animal by products such as diary. Lacto-Vegetarian : will consume diary products with vegetables and fruits Ovo-Vegetarian - will eat eggs with vegetables and fruits Then we have the gluten-free observers who by choice or health issues will not consume gluten found in flour.
