J+M Dairy Delights on Ariapita Avenue.

Located on 'the Strip' on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, this quaint ice cream parlour is pushing the traditional ice-cream tolerance level.

Recently, Miranda, half of J+M, introduced some of their products such as  Guinness, Nutmeg, Angostura Bitters and Pistachio flavours, with a promise to perfect their Sorrel Ice Cream. Sorrel is a local flower that blooms in late November and locals would create a drink from its extract. This beverage counts as one of the Trinidadian Christmas traditions.  Another is Ponche a Creme. Usually a milk based, alcoholic drink, J+M realised that it held the basic properties for ice cream and decided to innovate.

They made Ponche a Creme Ice-cream.  Not only did I enjoy the sample, I ordered the one size tub of the ice cream as well.  Miranda gently advised me that the ice cream will always maintain its 'freshly churned' state due to many bottles of rum that's in it.  It really can not freeze!   They also over servings in the traditional cones and cups.

Another reason that I enjoy this dessert, is the minimal use of preservatives and support for the local industry.  Jose, the other half of J+M, stockpiles fruit pulp as they “use only the real thing”. “When it is high in season, we buy, pulp and freeze. Actually I prefer the Soursop and Barbadine from St Vincent and Grenada, they are superior.”

At J+M, they open on evenings till late at night as the 'Strip' becomes alive during the late evening hours and open for their clients.  The palour is quite small, 'a hole in the wall' but the prime location makes up for space.  Located in close proximity to Coco Lounge, Frankie's and Hog and Whistle Bar they do enjoy the foot traffic from these 'limers.'  J+M also opens on Sunday afternoons for the familial time of ' Ice-cream after Church.'

I found that there is a bit of nostalgia attached to having a Christmas delight at any time of the year other than December.

Do you agree?

Salud!
